Inaugural Film of 18th IFFT Thrissur
International Film Festival

Inaugural Movie:

JOHN

2022/Malayalam/

Director: Premchand

Producer: Muktha Deedi Chand

JOHN, intends a due tribute to the director John Abraham - the iconoclast of Indian cinema. He was reportedly singing his last as he tripped from an unfinished building which bears a clear metaphorical implication to his life. The movie probes into the gloomy other side of his celebrated anarchy which in turn portrays the uncherished dream cinema endeavors of this genius. John's last film 'Amma Ariyan' was 'report to mother', while this film is 'report to father' as he revisits his nears and dears from the graveyard, where he was buried along with his father as per his last wish.

INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OF THRISSUR

INTRODUCTION - Film Festivals have evolved through the seven decades and have occupied an indelible space in the cultural milieu in India. Starting from 1952 after the first International Film Festival in Delhi, the movement has spread its presence to other locations also. Through 1990s the film enthusiasts of semi urban lower tier towns and also villages, began to undertake bold initiatives to propagate the concept of good cinema through Film Festivals. State Governments also realized the cultural impact of the movement and started to provide spaces and the movement received the much needed push from them. After initial hesitation, the rural folk also gradually joined the bandwagon and the idea of Film Festival became an integral organ of the socio cultural space. The year 2004 marked the rise of Thrissur Janasamskara Chalachitra Kendram and with the unstinted support from Thrissur Corporation, we conducted a highly successful campaign for bringing in the concept of Good Cinema to the enlightened denizens of Thrissur. Since then we have never looked back. Progressively, in the subsequent years, the festival matured into one of the most sought after Film event in the state. History of Previous Festivals - The festivals of yesteryears were not restricted to movie house exhibitions. Seminars and talks by eminent film and art personalities witnessed active and ardent participation from all walks of life. The Tier 2 towns and villages were also brought to our operational ambit and the involvement of enthusiasts from those places were encouraging. The role of Festival Booklets cannot be discounted. They provide insightful information of the screenings held and are historical documents. The booklets brought out by us with their brief and clear information were well received by the film fraternity. Our endeavours in the publishing field resulted in the publication of five books. Two of them were biographies, one of P K Nair, the former director of Film Archives of India and of K R Mohan the eminent film maker. We had the fortune to host an array of distinguished guests in all the previous festivals. Shyam Benegal , Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Late Budhadeb Dasgupta, Girish Kasaravalli, Bharathi Raja, Madhur Bhandarkar, Late K G George , Shaji N Karun ,K P Kumaran, TV Chandran were some of the doyens whom we had the privilege to have as our guest speakers. COLLABORATORS - Without the support of participating establishments, we would not have reached the desired heights. Thrissur Corporation, Federation of Film Societies of India, Thrissur JIlla Panchayath, andmany other organizations rendered us meaningful support, for which we aregrateful.

FESTIVAL DIRECTORS NOTE

It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce the 18th edition of International Film Festival of Thrissur, Kerala which is scheduled to happen from March 3rd to 9th, 2023. As a joint venture of the Thrissur Janasamskara Chalachitra Kendram,Thrissur Corporation, Kerala Chalachitra Academy, FFSI keralam & Thrissur Jilla Panchayath.it is going to be one of the marked socio-cultural events that are lined up for this year in central Kerala. The different kinds of collectives that films could bring about, just like many other art and cultural forms have been pivotal in bringing about new ideas and often in changing the social status quo of a time. Therefore, bringing the movie enthusiast back to the physical space of the theatre from the confines of ‘containment zones’ and away from the pandemic- induced self isolation has become part of the design of all recent film festivals. To break down the mental barriers of languages, nations, communities as well as to dissolve the distinctions between the moviemaker and the audience who are brought together under the common rubric of ‘the cinephile’ is part of the festival design. In addition to this feature, the benchmark feature of this festival will be the prominence that is given to debut directors and their films as it has been the tradition of IFFT from its inception. Film screenings at INOX Theatre in SOBHA CITY MALL -will include selections falling under the categories World Contemporary Cinema, Indian Panorama and Malayalam Cinema now. Beginning with IFFT 18, an award for the best debut film in Malayalam and debutant director will also be instituted from this year in addition to the already existing FIPRESCI Award for International debut film/ debutant auteur and K.W. Joseph Film Award for Indian debut film/ debutant auteur. Looking forward to a fruitful interaction between people from various walks of life aligned around the medium of cinema in both real and virtual modes. Best wishes and regards, Niveditha Kalarikkal
